Edgy, #bluehairdontcare fun shooting with Denver & NYC model Daniel today at the downtown Studio Corp Denver location. Daniel has been jet setting back and forth between Denver and New York City, but he will soon be based out of Brooklyn, NY, so I was stoked to get the opportunity to photograph him before he heads out of town more permanently. Just a little shoot to capture a few head shots and portfolio work for both he and I, juggling our creativity together in the studio. Here are some of my favorites from Daniel’s shoot today!

fall + family | portrait session preview | Colorado family photographer

October is a symphony of permanence and change. -Bonaro W. Overstreet

Here’s a wonderful family that returned to me for updated family photos. It is a pleasure to capture your family’s seasonal, special event, annual or biannual portraits, to preserve your memories as your family grows and changes.
I love the drama that the golden backlight and ginger color from the fall foliage can add to a family session. For photographers, Autumn in October can be such a rich time to frame your subjects in the natural environment, with trees, leaves and rustic backdrop. In Colorado, the crisp early freeze changed the fall foliage from buttery bright to a bit dry & moody quickly over the past couple of weeks, but it still left us with a bit of whimsy, to embrace the season, for these just-before dusk casual portrait shots. I’m crushing on the movement my littlest subject here, with her wavy blond curls, created while twirling to add something special for this year’s adventure with her family’s photo session with me. Want to start your own tradition of having family photos taken? Contact me and let’s create a session together.

flashback friday | below zero frigid family shoot

I was just sitting here working on some edits for shoots from this past week and decided to peek back at some of last year's sessions.  I landed on some saved files of this shoot of a dear family that had planned to do a little vintage inspired theme with their antique car for a holiday session and our scheduled date landed on one of the coldest days of the year.  In below zero temps, with a toddler and a baby in tow we cranked out the shoot!  They were such brave troopers and enthusiastic about getting these shots of their family done in time for making their annual Christmas card.  You can almost see the chill in the air in their photos!  Sneaking out for a few brief moments at a time outside with a couple breaks back inside the house to warm up, we managed to capture some really great images!  Do you think you could get your family to cooperate for an unexpected extreme weather photo shoot?  Or, for photographers, what's the wildest weather you've worked through to capture photos?  Feeling a bit of a Frank Sinatra vibe from dad's style in these photos.  I just love clients who get excited to dress up or do a theme and team up for a creative shoot!

I am a natural light lifestyle & portrait photographer in the Denver metro and surrounding area.  Capturing your family's memories or doing a creative photo shoot with street life, pets, products, architecture, fitness, dance or children is my passion and art!  We're presently lacking snow in the current warm Denver "winter" climate, but maybe we will get a flurry wonderland soon and when we do, I'd love to do a snowy shoot with you!

What to Wear!

Do you find it daunting to come up with coordinating outfits for your upcoming Fall or Winter family photo sessions?  It can be challenging figuring out how to match up each family member without being too matchy.  A photo session is a great time to style yourself and family up and get a little dressy!  Most of us don't have too many excuses to get dressed up, so, go ahead and make your photo shoot the excuse to have some fun with styling.  The first thing to do is choose a color palette that appeals to you for the season.  Do you want neutral, casual and crisp? Are you feeling that bright red holiday vibe or perhaps a moodier contrast of dark maroon and evergreen?  Or, maybe you want to get the family dolled up in an edgy, hip look with a bit of leather and shimmer of gold or silver?

Think mom's dress color matching son's shirt, or daughter's dress color matching a pop of color in mom's statement necklace!  Women think heels, they help elongate the legs.  Men go for that sport coat/blazer. Boys look fantastic in a bow tie that matches a color on mom.  Girls look wonderful in a fancy dress with a headband accessory.  A touch of make-up and hair styled like you're attending an event is perfect!  The most important thing is for you to be comfortable, but don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone just slightly. These are just suggestions that I've discovered can really help a photo shoot be successful! Hopefully you'll spot something to stir your imagination and help you get started on picking things out. I've created some Polyvore styling sets for you to peek at! Have fun!
